The flu, swine flu, H1N1, vaccinations..the list goes on and on and it’s taking over the news and other media forms the past couple of months. Freehold Chiropractor, Dr. Russell Brokstein, educates the community and surrounding towns of Marlboro, Manalapan, Howell and Jackson, NJ about what the shots contain, many health risks and that there are healthier alternatives. Many people don’t know the importance of chiropractic and how it can actually boost the immune system and allows the body to function optimally. Dr. Brokstein of Hometown Family Wellness Center discusses these topics in the following video:
From the day a child is born, he or she is subjected to many stressors that can affect their health. Traditional medicine quickly prescribes drugs to kids which can compromise their health long term and have many side effects. How would you like a more healthy, natural way of having a healthy kid? Lets go over 11 Reasons why chiropractic is for children in keeping them healthy:
1) Chiropractic Boosts Your Immune System
Research shows the positive effects of chiropractic adjustments for the immune system. Children are around many bacteria and viruses that can make them sick. The stronger the immune system the healthier they will be at fighting illness.
In one study, production of interleukin-2 -induced immunoglobulin G and immunoglobulin M was significantly increased in cultures from subjects treated with spinal manipulation. In other studies, inflammation factors are reduced after chiropractic adjustments.
2) Chiropractic Helps Ear Infections
Misalignments of the vertebra in the neck put pressure on the nerves that regulate the ears but also on the Eustachian tubes that help drain the ears. When the tubes are blocked, fluid builds up. Bacteria thrive in fluid. By removing the pressure, the tubes can naturally drain and remove the environment that the bacteria grow in. Medical intervention includes anit-biotics that temporarily kill bacteria but it’s very common for the infections to come back because the fluid is still there. A vicious cycle of multiple rounds of anti-biotics are prescribed. Then eventually the doctors perform surgery to insert tubes to help drain the ears. Both these procedures have major side effects of resistance to anti-biotics, decreased immune systems, digestive problems and even hearing loss. Chiropractic is for children to remove the pressure naturally with gentle adjustments to the vertebra that are causing the problem.
Our Freehold chiropractor has helped dozens of children relieve ear infections naturally! Watch one of our patients tell their story:
3) Chiropractic and Asthma Relief
Asthma and other respiratory conditions are experienced by more kids every year. Studies are showing that chiropractic can help by removing the interference and allowing the lungs to function better. One study of 36 children rated their quality of life substantially higher and their asthma severity substantially lower after 3 months of adjustments.
Our chiropractor in Freehold, Dr. Russell Brokstein, suffered with bronchial conditions from age 14 to 24. During college years he would fight bronchitis every 6 to 8 weeks. Doctors prescribed multiple inhalers, none of which provided any relief. As a competitive soccer player it would become difficult, especially during colder weather, upon exertion. At the age of 24, Dr. Russell started getting adjusted and hasn’t had one bought of the condition.
He also has a brother-in-law who suffered from severe asthma from the time he was born until 2 years old. The medical doctors told his parents he would be in and out of the hospitals the rest of his life. Fortunately they are big proponents of chiropractic and were going for monthly maintenance care. Their chiropractor suggested bringing in their son and at that point he no longer suffered from asthma.
4) Chiropractic Relieves Colic
Colic is a condition where there are repeated bouts of excessive crying in a baby who is otherwise healthy. This can be rather frustrating for parents. A 2012 study of 104 infants with colic found that the parents reported a significant decrease in crying when treated with chiropractic.
5) Chiropractic Relief of Nocturnal Enuresis
This condition of bedwetting is difficult for children of any age. A recent study of 33 consecutive patients found a 66.6% resolution of nocturnal enurisis who were under chiropractic care for a year.
6) Chiropractic Improves Posture
Stress and injuries to the spine cause loss of flexibility, mobility and stability. Posture affects and moderates every physiological function from breathing to nervous system. Chiropractic along with exercise can improve natural, healthy posture which improves function of the spine.
7) Chiropractic and ADHD
Rates of ADHD are skyrocketing and there are many guesses at the cause. Many studies are showing the benefits of chiropractic treatment of children with ADHD and attention problems. The ICPA has shared many of these studies which you can access: click here
8) Chiropractic Reduces Stress
Yes, even children experience stress. Stress can be from the birthing process when doctors pull on the babies head and neck, stress from school, sports, using technology like cell phones and even chemicals in food. Stress increases cortisol levels which can interfere with learning and memory, lower immune function and bone density, increase weight gain, blood pressure, cholesterol, heart disease… The list goes on and on. It can also increase risk for depression, mental illness, and lower life expectancy.
A Japanese study found there are immediate positive effects on stress and cortisol levels following chiropractic care. These patients also had reduced pain levels and improved quality of life. Chiropractic is for children to help reduce stress!
9) Chiropractic Encourages Brain and Nerve Development
A baby’s nervous system controls all functions of the body from circulation, breathing, digestions, muscle movement and coordination, thinking, sensation and even playing. Interference to the nerve system can seriously reduce function. Chiropractic stimulates a child’s brain and nerve impulses creating a balance of health and well-being.
10) Chiropractic Is SAFE
Everybody knows how dangerous drugs and surgery is, yet more and more kids are pushed that way. Why would you subject your children to all those risks that just mask the symptoms and cause side effects?
Chiropractic is safe for everybody including children! Don’t you deserve a healthier child? Don’t you want your child to be optimally healthy without drugs or surgery?
A 2012 study in the JMPT examined chiropractic care of children from birth to adolescence. No serious side effects were seen in children in the 20,000 pediatric visits analyzed.
11) Birth is Traumatic to all Babies
Many adults go to a chiropractor when they hurt their back or neck. Birth is traumatic to the baby’s head and neck. In most instances the doctor is pulling on the baby causing misalignments of the cervical spine. This trauma can lead to many health conditions and in some cases SIDS. Dr. Christopher Kent wrote an article supporting chiropractic is for children: Subluxation and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.
It just makes sense to have a baby adjusted at birth. A 2013 study in the Journal of Attention Disorders found a higher incidence of ADHD symptoms in babies injured at birth.
Most people think chiropractic is for neck and back pain. Even though it is highly successful for musculoskeletal conditions there is much more to chiropractic. There is more research now than ever that regular chiropractic care is the best option at helping you and your family be healthy! Chiropractic is more about health, wellness and having an optimally functioning body. When you understand that your body is controlled by your nervous system and any interference will affect the functions of the entire body, you will understand that the only thing that removes the interference will help make you healthier naturally, without drugs or surgery. Chiropractic helps remove the interference! Chiropractic at birth can prevent long term consequences.
Studies are showing what millions of parents know: chiropractic is for children and family health! Are you ready to experience why all these other families go to a chiropractor for health and wellness?
Every day I hear patients explain to me that they have pain and they don’t know how it happened. Many medical doctors explain to their patients that they have arthritis that has formed in their spine and other joints. The patient is concerned with how it got there, but most doctors say it’s part of aging.
As a chiropractor in Freehold, NJ, it is important for the public to be educated on how this happens. Seeing people from all over Monmouth County, NJ in the towns of Marlboro, Howell, Colts Neck, Jackson, Morganville, Freehold and Manalapan, NJ, they always ask: Is it from the stress of their work? From playing golf for 20 years? Sitting at desks in school for years on end slouching? Or maybe the car accident many years ago?
The answer is.. it is more likely to be from the accumulative affects of all of these stresses to the body. From the time you are born, the medical doctors pulls and twists your neck and shoulders to deliver you. Then as an infant you start to learn how to walk… how many times do you think you fell? Do you have brothers or sisters? If so, did you wrestle or trip each other as a joke? As you get older you sit in classrooms with bad postures or carry backpacks that are too heavy for the spine. Did you play any sports and take a hard fall or tackle? Think of the trauma of just a little fender bender. Do you carry a pocket book or briefcase on a daily basis? Have you ever missed that last step or curb?
I think you get the point that every little thing builds up in your body, causing the joints to misalign. So, the real question with arthritis and spinal degeneration is not what you did, but what you haven’t done! Joints wear down faster when they are not aligned properly… they are stuck and not moving well. That’s why it is important to be under chiropractic care to get the joints aligned properly and keep them moving.
A great analogy to consider is your car: As you drive your car, your wheels become misaligned especially if you hit a pothole or a curb while parking. If you keep driving with them misaligned, the car starts to pull to one side, the tires wear out unevenly, and other parts of the car start to break down. You don’t keep driving like that if you want your car to last long enough. Also, every 3 months or 3500 miles or so we are informed to take the car in for maintenance, oil, lube and filter. Neglecting your car for this maintenance, you will build up expenses to fix things and the car won’t last as long as you want, your fuel efficiency decreases, you will have to keep replacing tires, etc.
Some research shows that arthritis starts to form after a joint is misaligned for as little as 2 weeks. Just like a cavity in the teeth, if it isn’t caught early enough it will progressively get worse. You know that waiting to fix these things costs a lot more money than if you had just prevented it from happening.
Blaming the activities in your life for arthritis is like blaming the sidewalk for scuffing your shoes. Everything wears down naturally as we use them, including your spine. If you focus more on prevention with regular maintenance chiropractic care, you can help slow down arthritis and other forms of wear and tear. Most people get this concept when it comes to their teeth: their teeth don’t hurt, but they get their teeth examined one to 2 times a year and cleaned, brush their teeth daily and floss to prevent decay. If you didn’t do this, teeth would decay as part of normal aging too! But it can be prevented with proper care.
Well your spine is a dynamic system that protects the most important system of your body.. your nervous system! Your nervous system controls all functions of your body. Many activities, stress and nutritional choices affect your spine and nervous system! Your teeth can always be replaced, but your spine and nervous system CANNOT!
In our office we take a different approach to your health than any other health professional in the area! As a chiropractor, we make sure your spine is aligned and properly balanced so your nervous system functions optimally. Don’t wait and get your spine and health checked today!
Your mom probably wanted you to look confident and proud but the bottom line is, good posture is good for your health and is now recognized as an important factor in aging well. “We all heard it when we were growing up – ‘stand up straight’, ‘you’re slouching’.
When your back is not properly aligned, your body’s center of gravity shifts, putting more stress and load on your muscles, joints, and ligaments. Poor posture is a major cause of neck, back and joint pain. When you slouch, your internal organs may be compressed affecting bodily functions like digestion and even your ability to breathe clearly.
Poor posture can be traced to many activities from sitting in front of a computer for hours, carrying heavy pocketbooks or briefcases on one shoulder all the time, wearing high heals, laying on a couch unsupported or sleeping improperly and exercising in poor form just to name a few. The muscles tire and the body shifts position, causing some muscle groups to become tight, stretched, and weak.
We are creatures of habit. When we have an injury, our body will move differently to avoid pain. Over time, the body will adapt. Our body will create new habits. The brain adapts and adopts new muscles and joint positions even in the absence of continued pain. We believe we are standing straight because our brain is being told by our senses that we are balanced, even though the mirror shows we are not.
To achieve the best posture when standing, the body should maintain a straight vertical alignment from the top of the head, through the center of the body, and down to the feet. Take a minute and go in front of a mirror in your house and check to see if one shoulder is higher than another, one hip is higher than another, if your shoulders are rotated forward. From the side, look for an imaginary straight line from the ear, shoulder, hip, knee, and ankle. When sitting, the spine and head should remain upright, while maintaining the three natural curves in the back. Also check these points on your children. The earlier the spine is checked for imbalances, the easier they are to correct.
Here are some tips to help you reduce the risk of poor posture as you sit in the office:
- Take frequent breaks – about every 30 minutes.
- If you cannot get up, stretch your arms and legs as much as possible.
- Sit in an office chair with a comfortable height to maintain good posture and provide adequate support for your back.
- Keep desk items – phone, calendar, appointment book – within comfortable reach.
- Women: avoid wearing high heels. They change the center of gravity and put extra stress on the back”(1)
Chiropractors refer to posture as the “window to the spine.” And, since your spine protects the master control system of the body (your nervous system), you need to pay attention to your posture on a daily basis.
Spinal shifts, vertebral misalignments and structural instability can lead to arthritic changes. They can also cause other health and/or functional problems as well. For example, did you know:
* Thoracic spine arthritis/spurs indicate accompanying coronary arteriosclerosis 85% of the time. Bone spurs and arthritic changes in the thoracic spine can mimic angina pectoris.(2)
* Upper Thoracic Spine – Children under chiropractic care showed a 96.5% non-occurrence rate of asthma, whereas children under medical care showed a 95% non-occurrence rate of asthma. The authors concluded that the immune systems of children under chiropractic care are better able to cope with allergens which may cause asthmatic conditions.(3)
* Mid Thoracic Spine – Using radiography, Burchett examined sixty-one hospital patients and found that in 88% of patients with gallbladder disease there was lipping (arthritis) from T7-T10; spinal osteophytes (T9-T11) were found in 82% of those with stomach disease. Many sufferers of pancreatic dis-ease had segments T5-T7 involved and 31% of patients with duodenal disease had osteophytes at T9-L2.(4)
* Lower Thoracic Spine – Subluxations (vertebral misalignments) of the T6 – T10 vertebrae can cause gall bladder symptoms.(5)
Every aspect of our lives affects posture: nutrition, stress, exercise, mental development, and body fat. Posture is one of the most overlooked keys to better health. “Research studies show the truth in what mothers have always known: standing up tall improves our health.” May is the perfect time to celebrate a renewed commitment to health, longevity, and new habits.
Every year in honor of National Correct Posture month in May, Dr. Russell Brokstein, chiropractor and owner of Hometown Family Wellness Center in Freehold, NJ, offers professional posture assessments. Dr. Brokstein will be examining the spines of children and adults using state of the art computerized spinal assessments. These exams help prevent unnecessary muscle imbalance, structural instability, scoliosis and other health conditions related to poor posture. We’ve been helping people of all ages in Freehold and the surrounding towns of Marlboro, Manalapan, Howell, Colts Neck, Jackson, Morganville and other towns in Monmouth and Ocean Counties in New Jersey.

People suffer daily with asthma, bronchitis and other breathing restrictions on a daily basis. They turn to medications and inhalers that at best give temporary relief but don’t address the underlying cause of the condition. Everything in your body is controlled by the nervous system and that includes your lungs. If there is pressure on the nerves that regulate breathing, the lungs can NOT function at 100%. This goes for all functions and health of the body as everything is controlled by the nervous system.
Following is a video of one of our patients who was born with an asthmatic condition until he was 2 years old at which point the medical doctors told his parents he would be in and out of the hospitals for this condition. Fortunately his parents were seeing a chiropractor who explained to them how chiropractic can help. Watch the rest of his story as he reviews how chiropractic has helped him since his childhood asthma, when he gets back pain, and that his entire family is under chiropractic care to maintain health and wellness:
Results like this are seen by patients who go for chiropractic care. My name is Dr. Russell Brokstein, owner and chiropractor at Hometown Family Wellness Center in Freehold, NJ. I had a similar experience in that I played competitive soccer and during high school I would have severe coughing attacks. The doctors my parents brought me to said it was a bronchial condition and they would just try different inhalers til one worked. Not one gave me any relief of these attacks and when I went to college, the attacks got worse and to the point that I had bronchitis every 6 to 8 weeks for my 4 years there. Upon deciding to go to chiropractic college as I wanted to help patients be healthy without drugs and surgery, I received my first chiropractic adjustment in 1994. Since then not only have I not had any bronchial attacks, but from getting chronic colds as a child and teenager, I rarely if ever have a cold. My immune system is stronger and therefore my body fights more efficiently.
