We have 4 simple shoulder stretches we show our patients and we are going to share them with you! Too many people experience shoulder pain.
First… how did you even hurt the shoulder? Think about this: How many times do you wake up with pain in your shoulder? Are you sitting long hours at a desk? Do you work on a computer? Do you go to the gym and lift weights? Do you carry a pocket book or briefcase on your shoulder? Do you play sports like baseball, golf, tennis or others that are one sided putting repetitive stress into the shoulder? Did you have an accident? Have you ever thought of when you were a child learning how to walk and you fell hundreds of times landing on your arm or shoulder? There are so many ways we put stress into our shoulder joints and over the years the stress builds up.
It’s always important to get the shoulder examined to find the actual cause. We want to make sure there isn’t severe damage to the tissues like a labral tear or rotator cuff tear. Many times we can work on the area to improve the motion and get the tissues to heal. These 4 simple stretches can help decrease shoulder pain and improve range of motion. They are also great to help prevent and maintain the shoulders. Watch our short video and try them out yourself:
Try doing these simple shoulder stretches at least once a day, holding each one for 15 seconds each. You should see a gradual improvement in the reduction of pain and increase in range of motion. Remember if your shoulder hurts while doing these, STOP! Give us a call or go to your doctor to get the shoulder checked out.

Chronic pain is difficult to resolve. The typical ice, heat, rest and many dangerous medications don’t fix the problem. New studies are giving hope to many people suffering with chronic pain. The Journal of Parental and Enteral Nutrition study shows a correlation of Vitamin D deficiency with increased chronic pain.
414 patients at an inpatient acute rehabilitation unit in Mission Viejo, CA were studied. Upon each one’s admission to the facility readings were taken of their serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) levels and severity of their nonspecific musculoskeletal pain. There was a consistent pattern showing serum D levels are inversely associated with nonspecific musculoskeletal pain. Those that had low levels of vitamin D had the greatest amount of pain. Patients with higher Vitamin D levels had less pain.
More studies like this are being done. A simple supplementation of Vitamin D can be a natural solution to helping people with chronic pain. We are finding most people suffer with Vitamin D deficiency. It’s not only something that can be helped with improved diet and supplements but by also getting outside for more exposure to the sun. The sun is the most natural way to get Vitamin D. It is after called the sunshine vitamin!
Not only can chronic pain be helped with increased Vitamin D! Other conditions like cardiovascular disease, rickets, asthma, cancer, diabetes (Type 1 and Type 2), hypertension, glucose intolerance, multiple sclerosis, osteomalacia, eczema, cystic fibrosis can be from vitamin D deficiency.
There are many causes of vitamin D deficiency: a vegan diet, limited exposure to the sun, having darker skin, digestive conditions like Chron’s or celiac disease and even obesity. You can easily get your levels checked with the the 25-hydroxy vitamin D blood test.
Diet and supplementation can help improve your Vitamin D levels. The Institute of Medicine increased the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) of vitamin D for optimal health to 600 international units (IU) for everyone up to 70 years old and raised it to 800 IU for adults over 70. The safe upper limit was also raised to 4,000 IUs.
Foods higher in Vitamin D can be helpful with natural chronic pain relief. Some food are fortified with Vitamin D: cereals, orange juice, milk, cheese, lean meats, fish, beans, and eggs. It’s also important to get more sun and know that sunscreen blocks absorption of vitamin D. If you make it a habit of using sunscreen or cover up with clothes, take just 15 minutes a day to get some sun. You can also take quality vitamin D supplement.
In our Freehold chiropractic office we use a combination of regular chiropractic adjustments and recommendations of exercise, stretching and nutrition supplementation like Vitamin D in helping our patients live a more pain-free enjoyable lifestyle. To find out more click here.
Cryotherapy has been around for a long time but lately there is a newer craze called Whole Body Cryotherapy (WBC). With this therapy you stand in a chamber that is extremely cold from negative 75 degrees to negative 166 Fahrenheit for a up to 3 minutes. Many claims are being made that are unsubstantiated. There is not a lot of
research that shows the effectiveness of Whole Body Cryotherapy. The facts are studies show WBC induces tissue-temperature reductions that are comparable to or LESS SIGNIFICANT than traditional forms of cryotherapy.
World renowned Dr. Andrew Weil wrote an article recently discussing whole body cryotherapy: Cryotherapy Chambers: The New Big Chill? Read the article by clicking the title. It discusses the therapy in more detail, what you have to do and includes many of the risks. He concludes to be wary of whole body cryotherapy!
A recent study Whole-Body Cryotherapy: Empirical Evidence and Theoretical Perspectives was published in Open Access Journal of Sports Med. They state little proven benefits and since many athletes are subject to the marketing of this treatment: “until further research is available, athletes should remain cognizant that less expensive modes of cryotherapy, such as local ice-pack application or cold-water immersion, offer comparable physiological and clinical effects to WBC.”
In other words, instead of going to some practitioner who paid for an overpriced large body freezer so he can charge you for it, Whole Body Cryotherapy as of now is just another of the latest, expensive fads to charge more money. Rather than waste your time and money, stay at home, open your freezer and put some ice on it.
We believe in using treatments and therapies that are backed by current valid studies. Many passive therapies like whole body cryotherapy or ice therapy can be benefited at the comfort of your home without having to come and pay a practitioner extra money. Even insurances consider it experimental and will not cover the treatment.
At our Freehold chiropractic office we use more active therapies to correct the cause of your problems, not just passive therapies which at best might mask your symptoms. Make sure to be informed of the true aspects of treatment being performed on you.
