Back pain is suffered by 80% of the population. Many seek dangerous, invasive procedures offered by medical doctors, orthopedics and pain management doctors. Epidural spinal injections are one of the common treatments offered. Current research shows there is a natural approach to back pain that is better and safer than epidurals.
Epidurals are commonly used to treat low back pain, neck pain and disc herniations. They provide only temporary relief. Some of the common risks include: numbness of the bowels and bladder, infections, dural puncture, bleeding and nerve damage with chance of paralysis. There there are possible side effects: localized increased pain, non-positional headaches, dizziness, facial flushing, anxiety, sleeplessness, fever the night of the procedure, high blood sugar, stomach ulcers, a transient decrease in immune function, severe arthritis of the hips, weakening of the muscles, cataracts, changes in mentrual cycle and retention of water.
A 2013 study of 102 patients was reported in the JMPT comparing self-reported pain and improvement of patients with confirmed lumbar disc hernations upon treatment with either chiropractic adjustments versus epidural injections. 76% of chiropractic patients noted improvements where 62% of the patients treatment with injections. Significant reduction of pain was noted by 60% of those receiving chiropractic versus 53% of the epidural treated patients. An additional benefit is the chiropractic treatments are about 23% lower than the medical costs of providing epidural injections. This is significant being healthcare costs are out of hand in the United States.
Patients can avoid the risks of epidural injections. If you would like an approach safer than epidurals along with cost effectiveness, make sure to try non-invasive, chiropractic treatments first!
