Scoliosis and Neck Pain Helped by Freehold NJ Chiropractor

Scoliosis is an abnormal curve of the spine that occurs in 2 to 3% of the population, affecting from 6 to 9 million Americans.  Scoliosis starts developing around 7 years of age and progresses to around the age of 17.  Females are more likely to present with scoliosis, especially for it to progress to severe degrees.  Many people with scoliosis are asymptomatic, but many experience back pain, neck pain, headaches, fatigue, difficulty breathing and other problems.  Symptoms are the last thing to show up with a problem and you are more safe to be checked to prevent problems from getting worse, just like most people go to a dentist periodically to get their teeth and gums checked.  You would never tell the dentist to not worry about a cavity he finds just because there is no pain.  You  know that cavity will just get worse and cost more money if you wait.

There are several signs of possible scoliosis:chiropractor freehold Scoliosis and Neck Pain Helped by Freehold NJ Chiropractor

1)  shoulders are uneven with one or both shoulder blades sticking out

2)  one or both hips are raises or one rotated forward/backward more than the other

3)  the head is not centered over the pelvis

4)  the rib cage is rotated and higher on one side than the other

5)  when the person leans forward to touch the toes, one side of the spine is more prominent or a bulge forms

6)  the entire body leans to one side

Most medical doctors say the scoliosis is insignificant if the curve is less than 25 degrees, but anytime the spine is misaligned it puts pressure on the nerves which control all functions of the body.  This will not only cause pain, but can affect your breathing, your digestion and other normal body functions.  If the scoliosis reaches 50 degrees or more they recommend invasive surgery where they cut away parts of your spinal bones and then insert rods that are locked into place restricting the entire motion of your spine.  If you get to this point, many of your normal daily activities will no longer be allowed.  Just think if your spine was just one long fused bone, rather than the 24 movable vertrebra of the neck, thoracic and lumbar spine.

Watch the video below of one of our patients explain about her experience with scoliosis.  She unfortunately was told she had to get the surgery many years ago, and now experiences neck pain and periodic back pain.

At our office, Hometown Family Wellness Center located in Freehold, NJ, we have seen many patients who were never told their alternative options to avoid surgery.  Fortunately as we educate many parents, they bring their kids in to get checked as infants thru adolescence to get adjusted to help adjust their spines.  Chiropractic has been one of the most successful forms of treatment in helping patients who have scoliosis.  Chiropractors analyze the spine for spinal misalignments or subluxations that put pressure on nerves and decrease optimal health.

Scoliosis Pain Relieved Naturally by Freehold NJ Chiropractor

A recent study shows promising results that chiropractic combined with exercise can significantly ease the pain and disability of adult scoliosis.

The research had 28 patients with adult scoliosis participate in a chiropractic chiropractor freehold Scoliosis Pain Relieved Naturally by Freehold NJ Chiropractortreatment protocol.  After six months of treatment, patients saw their disability scores cut in half and experienced a 40% reduction in pain.  The improvement in  spinal alignment from the chiropractic adjustments, also allowed many of the patients to breathe normally again — something they hadn’t experienced in years.

With adult scoliosis the spine becomes progressively more curved and with these misalignments, pressure occurs on the nerves causing not only pain, but decreased function of the organs, muscles and other tissues that they control.  Unfortunately, most people who have scoliosis don’t experience the pain, but have other symptoms of poor health including constipation, diarrhea, restricted breathing and headaches, just to name a few.  A combination of gentle chiropractic adjustments and exercise regimen can reduce the compression of nerves while promoting proper spinal alignment and optimal health!

In our office, Dr. Russell Brokstein, provides a combination of chiropractic, therapeutic stretching and exercise to help balance the spine and the supporting structures.  He has been helping patients for the past 13 years that have suffered with scoliosis and many other conditions.  His office, Hometown Family Wellness Center is located in downtown Freehold, NJ and you can get more information by clicking his website:  www.ChiropractorFreehold.com.  If you or somebody you know in Freehold, Marlboro, Manalapan, Howell, Colts Neck, Morganville, Jackson and other nearby towns in Monmouth County,  New Jersey have been suffering with scoliosis, share this information with them.

Do You Have Scoliosis? Chiropractor in Freehold NJ Shares Current Scoliosis Research

Scoliosis affects 2 to 3% of the adolescent population.  For many people it is just a mild form, but others it is disfiguring and whether mild or severe can cause many health conditions and can even be disabling.  I have had many patients with scoliosis suffering with breathing restrictions, headaches and migraines, neck pain, back pain, sciatica, degenerative spinal conditions, numbness and tingling down the arms and many other symptoms resulting from the curve in their spine.

My name is Dr. Russell Brokstein and I have been helping patients with many conditions for over 13 years with chiropractic and other natural treatments.  I have seen patients with many different levels of scoliosis.  Unfortunately the medical community doesn’t intervene with scoliosis until it progresses to severe limits.  Current research shows early intervention with chiropractic treatment is the best option over bracing and surgery in reducing the scoliosis and symptoms that can result from the curve.  I recently saw a great interview on fox news online that has Dr. Vidan, DC discussing the research about scoliosis:

Freehold NJ Chiropractor Shares Studies Comparing Scoliosis Treatment Outcomes

As a chiropractor in Freehold, NJ, I have been helping patients who suffer with Scoliosis for the past 13 years.  We’ve helped hundreds of scoliosis patients feel better, get rid of their back pain and return to an active lifestyle.  We’ve also saved many people from the risky option of surgery.

Scoliosis is an aggravating condition.  There’s stiffness, pain and often times a deformed posture.  It can also cause headaches, sciatica, increased stress, limitation of activities and over time increased spinal degeneration, as well as disc degeneration.

Many patients suffering with scoliosis have been told they have only three options — to do nothing, bracing, or surgery.

Bracing is often recommended by medical practitioners in the early stages of scoliosis, but one study conducted at the Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation at the University of Iowa compared bracing to non-bracing. And no difference was noticed in the surgery rates (Spine 2007).

This means bracing was no help with their scoliosis. Their scoliosis curvature advanced at the same rate as those who did nothing.

Studies have also shown that patients felt bracing handicapped their life and left a psychological scar.

Surgery Is Not The Only Option

Scoliosis surgery involves implanting metal rods and screws to straighten the spine.

However, numerous studies have shown that multiple complications, including rusting and corrosion, bending, or breaking completely, prove this method dangerous.

Many sufferers who had the rods implanted, end up  later undergoing surgery to have them removed.

While I was in chiropractic college, I was fortunate enough to meet another chiropractic student that went around to all the other classes to speak about her experience.  When she was 17 years old, her orthopedic doctors told her she had no option but to get rods placed in her spine to correct the scoliosis.  She went into detail of the thickness of the rods being as thick as her pinky, how they cut away parts of her vertebral bones, hook and lock in the rods, then place bone filler for the bones they cut away.  The bigger problem began a year later when she started experiencing more excruciating pain.  Fortunately for her, somebody recommended she follow up with a chiropractor who took more X-rays to find that her scoliosis was starting to bend the rods.  He recommended that she have the rods removed and start under chiropractic care.   This changed not only her life, but lead her to going into chiropractic for her own career and share her experience with other chiropractors and those who have scoliosis.

In addition, thousands of post-surgery scoliosis patients are legally declared permanently disabled every year. Follow up x-rays on other cases have shown that scoliosis can even return years after the operation.

A Less Invasive Treatment Can Help

Chiropractic has a long record of successfully helping people with scoliosis.

A study published in a scientific journal (JMPT 2001) showed patients with scoliosis who went for chiropractic care had an actual decrease in the scoliosis curvature.

The head of the study, Dr. Charles Lantz, DC, PhD stated…

“Chiropractic appears to offer a distinct advantage in the management and monitoring of early stage scoliosis.”

The most useful part of this study was that the sooner a child underwent treatment, the better the change in the curvature.

Another study showed that “the combined use of spinal manipulation [chiropractic care] and postural therapy appeared to significantly reduce the severity of the Cobb angle in all 19 subjects.” (BMC Muscoloskelet Disorders 2004)
