A new study: The Addition of Upper Cervical Manipulative Therapy in the Treatment of Patients with Fibromyalgia shows chiropractic is very effective in providing fibromyalgia relief.  120 people suffering with fibromyalgia and having dysfunction in the upper cervical region were split into a treatment and control group.  Everybody participated in an education group about fibromyalgia and relief options, cognitive therapy and exercise programs over a 12 week period.

Half of the individuals in the study also received upper cervical adjustments.  These adjustments to the C1/C2 portion of the spine are very specific, high velocity, low amplitude thrusts.  The first 4 weeks, treatment was 3 times per week, which was then reduced to once a week for the remainder of the study.

Participants of the study completed various questionnaires at the start of the program, at the completion of the study and a year after the study was finished.  They answered questions on the effects of chiropractic on providing fibromyalgia relief and quality of life including ability to perform physical functions, days missed from work, sleep disturbances, pain levels, fatigue, depression and anxiety.

Those who received the chiropractic upper cervical adjustments improved more than the group who didn’t get adjusted.  The adjustment group had greater than 15% improvement in their questionnaire scores.  The study concluded that adding chiropractic provides more benefits in fibromyalgia relief.

Unlike medical treatments which just try to mask symptoms, chiropractic addresses the cause of the problem!
