Every day people go to work and sit at their desks for hours at a time.  There is no wonder people experience neck pain, back pain, headaches, shoulder pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, aches and pains.

It is extremely important for people to make sure their work station is set up ergonomically correct.  Ergonomics is the study of the relationship chiropractor freehold Freehold Chiropractor Reviews Ergonomics at your Work Stationbetween workers and their environment, especially the equipment they use.  The applied science of equipment design, as for the workplace, is intended to maximize productivity by reducing operator fatigue and discomfort.

Physical ergonomics at work is concerned with postural  and biomechanical characteristics as they relate to physical activity.  The relevant topics include working postures, materials handling, repetitive movements, work-related musculoskeletal disorders, workplace layout, safety and health.

The picture to the left can help you set up your desk, chair, computer screen, keyboard and mouse and guide you to proper posture to help reduce work related injuries.  It’s also important to note to take breaks every 30 minutes.  During these breaks, get up, walk around and stretch.

Chiropractor in Freehold NJ Review by Survivor of 9/11 for his Back Pain and Shoulder Pain

Two years ago I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to help a survivor of the terror attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11.  I remember the day he came into the office with the assistance of his wife who also survived.  He had been suffering for 8 years with low back pain and shoulder pain and was using a walker to help him get around.  From getting out of the chair in our waiting room to getting to the exam room took a lot of effort and pain.  Watch and listen to Edwin tell his story.

I am so thankful to have had the opportunity to help such an amazing gentleman and family, allowing him to start enjoying his normal daily activities once again.  This is what chiropractic is all about!  Helping patients correct the underlying cause of their problems and being healthy naturally, not just cover up pain and symptoms with medications.  This is why I love what I do as a chiropractor, helping patients like Edwin and every other patient I have had over the past 14 years.

If you are suffering with neck pain, back pain, headaches, fibromyalgia, sciatica, sports injuries, or looking to be optimally healthy without drugs and surgery, call our office and be a part of our success stories.  For more information on Dr. Russell Brokstein and Hometown Family Wellness Center located in Freehold, NJ go to our website:  www.ChiropractorFreehold.com or call us at 732-780-0044.

Neck Pain and Shoulder Pain Relief at Freehold NJ Chiropractor

Everybody has that neck pain and sometimes shoulder pain that occurs.  Stress, tension, daily activities like sitting at a computer, slouching, carrying a heavy pocket book or briefcase, work activities, as well as typing or sleeping incorrectly on your side or stomach can cause the bones in the neck and back to misalign.  When this happens you get pressure on the nerves, joint dysfunction, and possibly damage to the discs.  If left long term, degeneration can occur very similar to leaving a cavity without treatment.

Taking medication for the pain only temporarily covers up the symptoms.  This can be dangerous as it gives you false security that the problem is fixed.  The underlying cause of the pain is still present and the next time the pain presents itself it is usually worse as well as the actual cause of the symptoms.

As a chiropractor in Freehold, NJ, I see many patients who present with neck pain and shoulder pain.  I do a thorough evaluation to explain to you what is the cause of your problem and how we will actually correct it.  A chiropractic treatment plan, as well as home exercise and nutritional guidance is important to incorporate to obtain correction.  For over 14 years we continue to successfully get results patients are happy with so they can once again enjoy their normal daily activities without the harmful side effects of NSAIDs, pain medications and other pills.

Whiplash Leads to Referred Pain Explains Chiropractor in Freehold NJ

Many people experience whiplash injuries after an auto accident or other trauma where the head and neck experiences a sudden abnormal motion or force that causes it to go beyond it’s normal range of motion.  The muscles, tendon and ligaments become damaged.  Car accidents are a common cause of whiplash but it can be a result of playing sports and accidental falls.  Other terms used to describe whiplash are acceleration flexion-extension neck injury and soft tissue cervical hyperextension injury.  Many doctors simply explain it to a patient as cervical sprain or cervical strain.

Neck pain and headaches are just 2 of the common symptoms people experience when they have a whiplash injury.  Whiplash can also result in arm pain, numbness and tingling, shoulder pain, neck chiropractor freehold Whiplash Leads to Referred Pain Explains Chiropractor in Freehold NJpain, dizziness, nauseousness and even TMJ.

One of the difficult aspects of whiplash is that the symptoms don’t present immediately after the trauma.  A lot of times it comes on days, weeks, months to even years down the road.  This is one reason why it’s very important to get evaluated after any trauma.

In 2008 a study was done that showed these symptoms are related to the injury to the neck thru referred pain.  Referred pain originates in one area but is felt in another area.  The pain signals from the injured tissues activate other nerves in the spinal cord and brain.  These nerves cause the brain to perceive pain in other areas that these nerves control.

In a Swedish study, researchers induced referred pain in whiplash patients and pain free people to see if they had a different referred pain response.  12 of the subjects were experiencing whiplash while the other 12 had no pain and were the control group.  The test subjects controlled the electrical stimulation levels that were used on the shoulder and upper arm to elicit referred pain.  There was a dramatic difference between the whiplash patients and the control group:

a)  The pain free control group needed 3 times the amount of stimulation to reach the pain levels the whiplash patients experienced.  The whiplash group was more sensitive.

b)  The whiplash patients experienced a significantly wider area of referred pain than the pain free group which reported limited amounts of referred pain.

c)  The type of referred pain was different in both groups.  The control group experienced referred pain that was always distal to the point of stimulation while the whiplash group experienced referred pain that was more proximal to the stimulation closer to the center of the body.

This study helps us further understand the whiplash injury as other studies have also shown that the central nervous system becomes sensitive and over stimulated because of the injury to the spine.  More recent research is showing patients who are experiencing central sensitivity are more likely to experience chronic long term pain and symptoms.

As a chiropractor in Freehold, NJ,  I have been treating whiplash patients for 14 years.  These studies are proof that early treatment after an auto accident or other trauma is extremely important to prevent chronic, long term problems. In our office, Hometown Family Wellness Center, we use state of the art computerized technology to help examine the spine, nerves and surrounding muscles to show how severe the underlying condition is and whether it is acute or chronic.  The earlier you are treated for the injury, we can correct the problem so you can continue to enjoy a normal, healthy active lifestyle and prevent further problems down the road.  Chiropractic finds the cause and treats it so you can be pain free once again without drugs and surgery.

Freehold Chiropractor Explains Shoulder Pain can be Associated to Neck Pain or Whiplash

Auto injuries are shown to cause more than just neck pain.  In a  new study researchers find that patients with whiplash or other causes of neck pain were more likely to have problems with shoulder function than healthy chiropractor freehold Freehold Chiropractor Explains Shoulder Pain can be Associated to Neck Pain or Whiplashpatients.  Misalignments of the shoulder can create or irritate neck pain.  The shoulder imbalances can also cause other problems including headaches or migraines.

Patients in the research had neck pain of different causes.  It was found they had more difficulty performing routine shoulder movements, and their head and neck postures were altered. The research also showed that depending on the cause of the neck problem influenced the type of shoulder problems the patient had: those patient that couldn’t elevate their shoulders as muchchiropractor freehold Freehold Chiropractor Explains Shoulder Pain can be Associated to Neck Pain or Whiplash as normal patients had insidious onset neck disorders while those patients that had shoulders that were rotated forward slightly had neck problems resulting from whiplash.

Like many other studies, it is found that whiplash patients have a higher risk of developing shoulder pain and experiencing a number of other conditions including pain, headaches, numbness and tingling just to name a few. This shows that neck injuries alter the function of other areas of the body and that it’s so important that a patient finds a practitioner that addresses the entire spine and other surrounding regions, not just the location of the pain itself.

Our chiropractic office, Hometown Family Wellness Center located in Freehold, NJ, addresses the cause of the problems that you are experiencing.  We have been helping patients for over 14 years in the Freehold area and surrounding towns of Marlboro, Manalapan, Howell, Colts Neck, Jackson, Morganville, and other communities of Monmouth and Ocean Counties in New Jersey.  Relying on medications might just cover up your pain at best, but increases the chances of disability because you are not addressing the cause of the pain and you become overconfident that just because the pain is decreased that you can perform normal activities without causing further harm.  Many studies show that chiropractic not only reduces your pain naturally without drugs or surgery, but improves your quality of life so you can enjoy your normal daily activities once again.  Seeking early treatment may help you avoid developing shoulder and back pain, arthritis, degeneration and other problems later on. Suffering with Neck Pain? Chiropractor in Freehold NJ Shares New Study!

So many people suffer needlessly with neck pain which many times leads to headaches, numbness and tingling and pain into the shoulders.  chiropractor freehold Suffering with Neck Pain? Chiropractor in Freehold NJ Shares New Study!Recently a new study was published showing that conservative care beats medication for neck pain.  In the study, it states that spinal manipulation and exercise are each more effective than over the counter (OTC) pain relievers, narcotics and muscle relaxants.  The study can be viewed by clicking:  Annals of Internal Medicine.

Both chiropractic and exercise had more than doubled the likelihood that participants experienced complete relief of their pain compared to the medication group.  For chiropractic patients, these benefits lasted for at least a year, demonstrating that chiropractic can provide long-term relief.

The authors concluded:  “Spinal manipulation therapy and home exercise led to similar and long term outcomes, but participants who received medication seemed to fare worse, with a consistently higher use of pain medications for neck pain throughout the trial’s observational period.”

The strong success of chiropractic and exercise lies in the fact that these 2 methods address the cause of the neck pain, rather than just masking the symptoms which is what the medication does.  Neck pain can be the result of sitting long hours at a desk, talking for extended periods on the phone, carrying a heavy pocket book or briefcase on a shoulder, or from an injury from an accident and no matter the cause, chiropractic will restore optimal pain free health without the harmful affects of medications or high risk of surgery.

In our office, Hometown Family Wellness Center in Freehold NJ, Dr. Russell Brokstein, DC utilizes a combination of chiropractic and home exercise to expedite the care of correcting the cause of the neck pain.  He has been treating patients for the past 13 years, helping people from the Freehold area and many other surrounding towns in Monmouth and Ocean County, New Jersey.  If you have been suffering with neck pain and you are ready to end the pain so you can once again enjoy your normal daily activities, call our office for a consultation.

Car Accident or Whiplash? Freehold Chiropractor Warns Not to Wait to Get Evaluated!

Every day people get into little fender benders and don’t realize the consequences of even just a 5 MPH bumper impact.  They feel fine immediately after the car accident but weeks, months and even years down the road you can start to experience neck pain, shoulder pain, tension, numbness and tingling and even headaches.

Watch this video to see a demonstration of what happens at 5km/h which is just 3 miles per hour!

As you can see, at just 3MPH, the neck whips backward and forward. This amount of force causes misalignments or subluxations in the neck which will put pressure on nerves. You can also get strain and sprain injuries which are further signs of whiplash injury. Many people who suffer conditions like fibromyalgia can correlate their symptoms back to the time of an auto accident.

You can experience whiplash even after a low speed accident. If you wait, you can develop spinal and disc degeneration down the road. Some research shows if a joint is misaligned for just 2 weeks, arthritis starts to develop.  Think of this like a cavity that forms and you don’t feel the pain for years when it has progressed and harder to take care of.

As a chiropractor in Freehold, NJ, I see many patients who come in with neck pain, headaches and migraines, numbness and tingling and they can’t figure out what caused the problem. After doing a thorough patient history, many times it can be matched to a past car accident. Be sure to get you spine checked after any accident, even if you don’t feel immediate pain, so you can prevent future problems and correct the underlying condition as soon as possible.  An auto injury many times goes undetected and needs somebody who does a thorough examination and has experience treating accident victims.

It is also very important to report the accident to your insurance company in case you do experience any symptoms and need treatment.  If you wait, then try and go back, they will most likely deny coverage.  By having a thorough history and examination by a chiropractor with experience with these injuries, you will have the documentation to prove correlation to the accident.

If you live in Freehold or nearby towns of Marlboro, Manalapan, Howell, Colts Neck, Jackson, Morganville or other Monmouth County communities, contact our office, Hometown Family Wellness Center or go to our website for more information: www.ChiropractorFreehold.com.  Let us know you were in an accident and looking for our special auto accident consultation and evaluation.

Suffering with Neck Pain? Freehold Chiropractor Suggests Exercise and Stretching!

My name is Dr. Russell Brokstein and as a chiropractor in Freehold, NJ, I see many patients with neck pain on a daily basis.  Many chiropractors just adjust their patients, but don’t show them exercises to help expedite recuperation.  In my office, exercise and stretching therapy is incorporated into all treatment plans.  Home exercise is so important and should be done by everybody.  If you have any pets, just watch them when they wake up from sleep or a nap and you will see the first thing they do is stretch to make sure all the muscles, tendons and ligaments are loose.

Exercise for the neck is very important since weak muscles are related to many painful conditions of the neck and, can contribute to fatigue, irritability, headaches and migraines, sleep loss, stress, numbness and tingling, shoulder pain and so much more.  When done correctly (perform slowly, staying within “reasonable” pain boundaries), you can increase your range of motion, reduce stiffness and tightness, and strengthen your neck muscles.

Just remember, before starting any exercise program to consult your doctor.  Also, if you have pain during exercise to get checked by  your doctor and report what you are experiencing.

The exercises below combine range of motion against light resistance in 4 directions (forwards, backwards, and left to right side bending).  To do these correctly use resistance similar to an arm wrestling contest:

1. Push your head into your hand while moving the head to the end of the range, “…letting the head win” (See A, C, E, G).

2. Repeat this going back in the opposite direction by “letting the hand win” (see B, D, F, H), again, moving through the entire range of motion.  ALWAYS push the head into the hands, Make sure you move the head against resistance in BOTH directions, 3 times each (A-B then B-A 3 times; C-D then D-C 3 times) then, (E-F then F-E 3 times, and lastly, G-H then H-G, 3 times).

The trick is doing this VERY slowly (to build motor control and coordination) and to move through the entire “comfortable” range of motion.  Repeat 3 times slowly.  If pain worsens, lighten up on the amount of pressure used or, stop the movement just prior to the sharp pain onset.  If you can’t make it to the end of the movement due to pain, make a note of how many reps it took before the onset or increase of pain and how far you could move your head.  Do 3 slow reps and then move to the next exercise direction.

chiropractor freehold Suffering with Neck Pain? Freehold Chiropractor Suggests Exercise and Stretching!

(The arrow represents the direction the head is moving and the hands are resisting, but not stopping, the movement; Use light pressure through the full ROM)

These exercises can be performed 1 to 3 time a day, according to tolerance, and will increase your range of motion, increase strength, and build coordination, all at the same time.  Feel free to contact our office for additional exercises or to answer any questions concerning you, your loved ones, or friends.

If you are experiencing any neck pain, you are a candidate for chiropractic care.  Pain is a sign to you that something is wrong and shouldn’t be taken lightly.  The longer you wait to get a problem checked the more chronic it can become and more difficult to correct.

Chiropractors are the only health professionals properly trained to detect and correct the cause of musculoskeletal problems.  By find the cause of the problem, we can correct the cause, so you can once again enjoy your normal daily activities and be out of pain.
