Freehold NJ Chiropractor Reviews Why Protecting Your Feet Protects Your Entire Body

Protecting your feet is an important step in stabilizing your spine, body and health!

Every day you walk or stand on your feet for extended periods, yet you most likely overlook the importance of your feet and the support they receive.  Every step you take immediately sends forces to the ankles, calves, knees, chiropractor freehold Freehold NJ Chiropractor Reviews Why Protecting Your Feet Protects Your Entire Bodyand hips that will extend all the way through your spine.

When you exercise with running, jogging and jumping the impact increases significantly.  A BBC News article states, “…champion male sprinters can hit the ground with a force that’s around 2.5 times their body weight (most people manage around two times).”  Read the entire article:   Will we ever… run 100M in under nine seconds?

More injuries are likely with the additional forces placed upon the feet during exercise especially when they are not supported properly.  The feet need proper footwear for different activity levels because our feet are the initial point of contact for most exercises.

Lets take a look at some activities:

RunningA great deal of stress is placed on the body every time you stride and the foot makes impact with the ground.  Whether you land on the balls of your toes or heel strike first, the impact on your feet while running is increased with the amount and frequency of impact.  The entire foot needs to be supported for these different types of gait, providing stability of the 3 ligaments that make up the arch of the foot and the shifting balance of the foot.  Proper support will ease the impact you experience that puts pressure on the feet, ankles, knees, hips, other joints and discs in the spine as you add up the miles you jog or run.  The correct support in your footwear reduces the stress on the body and soreness you can experience from exercise.

Exercise in the Gym – Many people go to the gym and more are getting into high intensity interval training and crossfit as they are total body workouts.  These new crazes hitting the fitness world involve quickly shifting the body, rapid jump movements and pivoting.  Your body relies on the feet for optimal balance, stability and posture, especially to ensure correct form and injury prevention.  The feet are stressed at many angles from these forms of activity, so your sneakers need to provide stability of your feet.  If you are involved in this type of exercise, you have to make sure your sneakers aren’t too soft or cushioned as it won’t provide even support and will reduce the stability you are given.

Not only are your feet different from everybody else in size and structure of the arch but your two feet are different from each other.  Then take into account how different your activity level is from every other person, it is important to get the right fit for EVERY situation.

chiropractor freehold Freehold NJ Chiropractor Reviews Why Protecting Your Feet Protects Your Entire Body Athletes and weekend warriors can control posture and stability during their workouts by combining the proper footwear with individually designed Stabilizing Orthotics.  This not only helps prevent injuries, but optimizes your overall performance.

If you take care of your feet, it will help take care of other parts of  your body and help to avoid common exercise injuries.  It’s a chain reaction when your feet are not properly supported.  View the picture to the right to see what happens when your feet are not balanced.  The arches start to drop at just 5 years of age and one side will usually drop more than the other.  This is just like driving a car with misaligned wheels:  the tires wear out unevenly, the car will most likely pull to one side, parts start wearing out, fuel efficiency drops, expenses to fix and repair damages increase.

Over time, just imagine how much stress is building on all the joints above your feet.  Then add the impact of exercise and it exponentially increases, causing the joints to wear down more quickly, degeneration, foot pain, knee pain, hip pain, low back pain and even leads to neck pain.

In our Freehold Chiropractic office, Hometown Family Wellness Center, we utilize chiropractic adjustments of the spine as well as the extremities (ankle, feet, knees and hips) and Foot Leveler’s Spinal Pelvic Stabilizers to help bring your body back to its natural state of alignment.  Using state of the art technology, we scan your feet to show you the imbalances of your feet and how severe your risks to injury are due to pronation of the feet, then the scan is used to build your custom fitted pelvic stabilizers.  This not only helps support your feet and prevent injuries, but it helps our patients hold their adjustments longer by stabilizing the foundation of the body.  Our goal is to correct the underlying cause of your pain and instability as quickly as possible and help prevent future problems down the road.  For further information on our office, go to www.chiropractorfreehold.com or call our office at 732-780-0044 for a consultation and complimentary foot scan.

A Natural Edge in Athletic Performance Provided by Chiropractic Explains Freehold Chiropractor

Athletes at all levels are using chiropractic for sports injuries and to recover from the demanding workouts.  Many college and professional teams even have chiropractors on their medical staff to treat patients.  chiropractor freehold A Natural Edge in Athletic Performance Provided by Chiropractic Explains Freehold ChiropractorJust this past football season, athletes were seen being treated by the team chiropractor right on the sidelines.  To the left you can see the Denver team chiropractor adjusting one of the players.

Now, a new award-winning study further confirmed previous studies that chiropractic can also improve athletic performance.  Chiropractic is giving a natural edge to the athletes.

Researchers examined 18 professional Brazilian judo competitors while under chiropractic care.  Half of the athletes received chiropractic adjustments while the other received sham treatment.  Researchers then evaluated athletes’ grip strength using a device that measures muscle force.

Throughout the study both groups maintained their regular workout schedule, but the chiropractic group had substantial improvements in their scores.  After just three treatments, the chiropractic group improved their grip strength by 11% on the left side and 17% on their right, while athletes in the sham treatment group had only improved by 4-6%.

This study is more evidence that chiropractic improves nervous system functioning, which in turn strengthens muscles.  Other studies and researchers report improved reflexes, flexibility, range of motion, breathing capacity, postural strength and coordination.

Wear and Tear Happens explains Freehold Chiropractor

Every day I hear patients explain to me that they have pain and they don’t know how it happened.  Many medical doctors explain to their patients  that they have arthritis that has formed in their spine and other joints.  The patient is concerned with how it got there, but most doctors say it’s part of aging.

As a chiropractor in Freehold, NJ, it is important for the public to be educated on how this happens.  Seeing people from all over Monmouth County, NJ in the towns of Marlboro, Howell, Colts Neck, Jackson, Morganville, Freehold and Manalapan, NJ, they always ask:  Is it from the stress of their work?  From playing golf for 20 years?  Sitting at desks in school for years on end slouching?  Or maybe the car accident many years ago?

The answer is.. it is more likely to be from the accumulative affects of all of these stresses to the body.  From the time you are born, the medical doctors pulls and twists your neck and shoulders to deliver you.  Then as an infant you start to learn how to walk… how many times do you think you fell?  Do you have brothers or sisters?  If so, did you wrestle or trip each other as a joke?  As you get older you sit in classrooms with bad postures or carry backpacks that are too heavy for the spine.  Did you play any sports and take a hard fall or tackle?  Think of the trauma of just a little fender bender.  Do you carry a pocket book or briefcase on a daily basis?  Have you ever missed that last step or curb?

I think you get the point that every little thing builds up in your body, causing the joints to misalign.  So, the real question with arthritis and spinal degeneration is not what you did, but what you haven’t done!  Joints wear down faster when they are not aligned properly… they are stuck and not moving well.  That’s why it is important to be under chiropractic care to get the joints aligned properly and keep them moving.

A great analogy to consider is your car:  As you drive your car, your wheels become misaligned especially if you hit a pothole or a curb while parking.  If you keep driving with them misaligned, the car starts to pull to one side, the tires wear out unevenly, and other parts of the car start to break down.  You don’t keep driving like that if you want your car to last long enough.  Also, every 3 months or 3500 miles or so we are informed to take the car in for maintenance, oil, lube and filter.  Neglecting your car for this maintenance, you will build up expenses to fix things and the car won’t last as long as you want, your fuel efficiency decreases, you will have to keep replacing tires, etc.

Some research shows that arthritis starts to form after a joint is misaligned for as little as 2 weeks.  Just like a cavity in the teeth, if it isn’t caught early enough it will progressively get worse.  You know that waiting to fix these things costs a lot more money than if you had just prevented it from happening.

Blaming the activities in your life for arthritis is like blaming the sidewalk for scuffing your shoes.  Everything wears down naturally as we use them, including your spine.  If you focus more on prevention with regular maintenance chiropractic care, you can help slow down arthritis and other forms of wear and tear.  Most people get this concept when it comes to their teeth:  their teeth don’t hurt, but they get their teeth examined one to 2 times a year and cleaned, brush their teeth daily and floss to prevent decay.  If you didn’t do this, teeth would decay as part of normal aging too!  But it can be prevented with proper care.

Well your spine is a dynamic system that protects the most important system of your body.. your nervous system!  Your nervous system controls all functions of your body.  Many activities, stress and nutritional choices affect your spine and nervous system!  Your teeth can always be replaced, but your spine and nervous system CANNOT!

In our office we take a different approach to your health than any other health professional in the area!  As a chiropractor, we make sure your spine is aligned and properly balanced so your nervous system functions optimally.  On top of that, Dr. Brokstein, DC also analyzes your body for stress, adrenal function and the toxicity of your body.  We are the ONLY doctor in Monmouth County, NJ to have state of the art FDA cleared biofeedback to analyze your body for over 160,000 sensitivities and stressors.  We educate our patients on healthy eating, weight loss and exercise.   Prevention NOW is more cost affective and helps avoid harmful drugs that at best just cover up symptoms and surgery.  Don’t wait and get your spine and health checked today!

Freehold Chiropractor explains most auto injuries including whiplash are missed after a car accident

As a chiropractor in Freehold, NJ, I am constantly reading articles, papers and blogs about different topics so I can further share with my community. Today I was reading an article from a fellow chiropractor in St. George, Utah.  His series of blogs covers everything pertaining to car accidents, from whiplash injuries, strains and sprains, typical symptoms with whiplash type injuries, some home care and most importantly why chiropractic is so important with whiplash and other auto injuries.  You can read all about whiplash at his blog:  Your Whiplash Injury

So many people get into car accidents of various severity.   Some are little fender benders and others end up with total destruction of the car.  Important to note is severity of the injuries do not always match the damage to a car.  Even a small 5 MPH bumper hit can cause whiplash and other bodily injuries.  Unfortunately most people will go to a hospital or medical doctor after the accident, and you are told you are fine as the X-rays are normal.  The fact is, hospitals and medical doctors just look for broken bones on the x-rays and miss the most important of the injuries:  soft tissue injuries and spinal misalignment.

Many times, people don’t know they were injured because they have no symptoms immediately after the accident.  Then 5, 10, 20 or more years later, all of a sudden you start to experience neck pain, back pain, headaches or migraines, even numbness and tingling, not knowing what the cause was.  A chiropractor that has worked with car accident injuries can put the puzzle together and show you how it was related to your past accident and treat you properly to correct the underlying cause of the symptoms.

If you  have been in a car accident, whether you are in pain or not, you should go to a chiropractor that has experience with auto accidents and have a thorough chiropractic and neurologic evaluation to make sure no long term damage was done.  It is much easier to take care of the problem immediately post accident versus waiting until you have more symptoms and scar tissue has formed years down the road.

We have 13 years experience treating auto injuries in our Freehold, NJ chiropractic office located in Monmouth County.

Due to Kickbacks, Risky Back Surgeries are on the Rise

Today I came upon a post by Dr. Graeme Gibson, Seattle Chiropractor that discusses an article he read on yahoo about orthopedic doctors receiving kickbacks for surgical procedures.  I took interest to this because this is not surprising at all, as medical doctors and pharmaceutical companies have been known for years for this kickback disgrace.

Many medications and now surgeries that people are receiving are unnecessary and put patients at risk.  Unfortunately most patients trust their doctors that what is being prescribed is in their best interest.  But when one knows the statistics of back surgeries having less than a 50% success rate and a high risk or paralysis, why are these procedures being done before conservative care in many instances?

Most outcomes of surgery, even if get pain relief, the patient is then extremely limited in their daily activities.  In most instances a surgery is considered a success if it provides pain relief, which most of the time lasts only 1 to 5 years, and then further surgical procedures are required.

Yes, medications and surgery are needed at times, but not at the rate they are being recommended.  It’s always important that a patient gets a second opinion, and if necessary a 3rd opinion before taking drastic measures such as surgery.  I highly recommend that anybody that has back pain, have one of those opinions be from a chiropractor as chiropractors are one of the few who are highly qualified for spinal problems.  Many times a short treatment plan of chiropractic care can determine if a patient can improve and avoid surgery.  Chiropractic is known to have around an 85% success rate with back pain, without the side effects of drugs or surgery.

I also have firsthand experience with back surgery, as my mother was told 15 years ago she needed surgery for spinal stenosis and a herniated disc and nothing else would help.  Fortunately for her, I was in chiropractic college and I said to please try going to a chiropractor.  I referred her to somebody I knew in her town… and we prevented her surgery for around 12 years before “needing” the surgery.  Chiropractic helped her maintain her normal daily activities without restriction.  Fortunately, when time came, I found her a great orthopedic surgeon who has an amazing reputation.

In my 13 years in practice, I have helped patients in Freehold, Marlboro, Manalapan, Howell, Colts Neck, Jackson, and Morganville, NJ avoid unnecessary surgeries that orthopedic doctors said were the only answer.  So before opting for surgery, give us a call to see if we can help you.

A Combination of Chiropractic and Rehabilitation are Most Effective Solution for Chronic Back Pain

All the years I have been in practice, I always stated chiropractic along with the proper therapeutic exercise was the best way of correcting back pain.  While reading blogs today, I came across a great post by Dr. Kevin Smith, Bethel Park Chiropractor, discussing this exact topic.

Around 80% of the population experiences back pain and results in the more missed days from work, than any other sickness or injury.  The majority of these patients seek care from medical doctors that just prescribe different medications from NSAIDS, to muscle relaxers and narcotic pain killers.  These approaches at best only cover up the symptoms, but aren’t a solution and have many harmful side effects.  On top of that, they rarely allow the patient to get back to enjoying their normal life and activities.

Current research is showing a combination of chiropractic and rehabilitation for lower back pain is the best approach.  Chiropractors find the cause of the problem by addressing the misaligned vertebra that are putting pressure on the nerves, that result in restricted motion, compensating muscle spasms and pain.  Chiropractic spinal adjustments free up the joints, allowing for optimal range of motion with reduction or elimination of pain and improvement in posture.

Chiropractic treatment is the safest and most gentle form of treatment.  And it has an 85% success rate with most back problems.  But by adding in proper therapeutic exercise and stretching, we can make that success rate go up even higher.  The body doesn’t just exist of bones and nerves, but the supporting soft tissues need to be addressed too.  In our office we assess the muscles of the spine, shoulders and legs as they support the back and neck.  Once aligning the spine has reduced most of the pain, with the proper stretching and then strengthening exercises, we can stabilize the spine to help prevent future problems and bring more optimal health.  All of this without drugs or surgery.  Additional balance and coordination exercises brings upon further stability.

With this approach of chiropractic and rehabilitation, more people could enjoy a pain free, normal lifestyle once again.  If you have been suffering with back pain, neck pain, headaches, leg or shoulder pain, find a chiropractor near you to live the lifestyle you deserve.

We have been helping chiropractic patients in Freehold NJ and the surrounding towns of Marlboro, Howell, Colts Neck, Manalapan, Jackson and Englishtown NJ for the past 6 years.  Call us to find out how we can help you!

Chiropractor in Freehold Helps Athletes With Injuries and Prevention

As a chiropractor in Freehold NJ I find it’s so important to keep up with research and read articles, journals and online blogs and media.  While doing my daily reading, I came upon a great post by Dr. Reza Abusaidi in his, San Mateo Chiropractic blog.  He talks about how chiropractic not only helps athletes when they are injured, but with the proper guidance and chiropractic care, many sports injuries can be avoided.  His article is based on football, but this article is great for all athletes in every sport.

I played competitive soccer for 28 years, and luckily for me I got under chiropractic care while in chiropractic college and found out how helpful chiropractic is in not only a quicker recovery, but in prevention of other injuries.  By making sure the bio-mechanics of the body are optimal, there is less likelihood  of incurring sprains, strains, cramps and pulled muscles.  Four years ago after a major knee injury playing soccer, my orthopedic doctor couldn’t believe the minimal extent of the findings on the MRI.  I credit that to the preventative chiropractic care I have utilized since first being introduced to chiropractic treatment 12 years earlier.

With this experience, I incorporated this into my practice not only in  helping athletes but the typical everyday patient, as I found out that many of these techniques from proper stretching, hydration, optimal nutrition, rest and consulting with the right professionals helped patients of all types in expediting their recovery and preventing future injuries from every day wear, tear and stress.

I’ve been fortunate to help patients of varying athletic levels while in practice this past 13 years.  From when I worked in Philadelphia with a contestant on American Gladiators, to a professional wrestler when working in Eatontown, NJ, and currently at my practice in Freehold, NJ I have helped many high school and college athletes in our community and surrounding towns of Marlboro, Manalapan, Howell, Colts Neck, Jackson and Millstone.

Optimal function is important for patients of all ages and activity level.  Improved motion, flexibility and reflexes are a result of chiropractic.  For athletes this can give a competitive edge as research has shown those under chiropractic care increase their speed, jumping ability, flexibility, reflexes and more.

This is why many college and professional teams are making chiropractic a part of their teams care.

Many famous athletes have come forward in support of chiropractic:

Emmitt Smith, who retired as the NFL’s all time leading rusher,  graciously thanked God, his family and his chiropractor for supporting him in his stellar career.

The three time world champion and 1996 Olympic gold medalist in the Decathlon, Dan O’Brian, was considered the world’s greatest athlete.  Dan has been quoted to say that, if it wasn’t for chiropractic, he would not have won the gold medal.  Other athletes from Jerry Rice, Roger Craig and Michael Jordan have also been thankful to chiropractic.  Organized sports have come a long way in embracing the chiropractic profession.

If these professional athletes see the necessity of chiropractic, don’t you think it’s something you deserve too!
